St. Joseph Skeptics set record with book donation

Alan Stolfus, library assistant at the Rolling Hills Consolidated Library, sorts through a large
donation of books Tuesday afternoon. The gift of more than 1,000 books was donated by the St. Joseph Skeptics.

Dancing snowflakes had only begun to tumble down outside as cheerful helpers began lugging in boxes of goodies on Sunday. It looked like the makings of a picture-perfect Christmas morning.

Inside the Rolling Hills Consolidated Library, the St. Joseph Skeptics were on hand for their weekly meeting. But unlike any meeting before, members sat like Santa’s elves in an assembly line — sorting out books, adding their stamp and passing them on.

The organization set a record Sunday with its book donation.

The Skeptics gave more than 1,000 books to the library. The books, ranging from “The Diary of Anne Frank” to a classic pop-up book of “The Wizard of Oz,” were personal donations by the group’s members.

“I’m really looking forward to looking at them all,” said Barb Read, library’s director. “This is a wonderful thing.”

Members said the book drive was not only a “thank you” to the library for allowing their weekly meetings, but a kick-off of sorts. The group started in late 2008 and, like many new organizations, is trying to become more involved with community projects.

“Libraries are worthy,” said Harrison Hartley, a member of the group.

With that many books, Ms. Read said the donation goes through a process of sorting and selecting. Some books, she said, will join the stacks, while others will be placed on a standby list or put in the adjacent Friends Bookstore.

Besides volunteering at the Open Door Food Kitchen, the group is participating in the Adopt-A-Highway program and an inmate worker program with Catholic Charities.

The St. Joseph Skeptics have said they formed their group to bring together like-minded individuals. Most members prefer a scientific explanation for the world around them, don’t believe in God and have a more free-thinking approach to government.
